Healthy adult fishes can often host small numbers of gill flukes without any ill effect and these are difficult to spot with the naked eye.
Careful study with a good magnifying glass under good light may reveal the flukes on adults or fry, otherwise you will need a microscope to confirm your suspicions.
Heavily infected fishes show the characteristic symptoms of increased respiration rate and gaping gills.
On newly hatched fry, a whitish mass may be seen around the gills on about the seventh day after hatching.
